Introducing Mat

A little history

I grew up in a small Canadian town with a population of 1000.
I was basically born with skates on my feet- I played ice hockey to the most competitive level until I was 18 years old. In High School I played every sport; made it to State Championships in Volleyball, Badminton, Basketball and Track & Field while I was still playing competitive hockey. Then I started coaching when I was 15…
I spent my summers working as a Sports Counsellor in summer and leadership camps. My twin and I were also leading some volleyball clinics for our local community.

It was my time at Uni where I found my love for running. I joined the XC team and track team in my 4th year, where I made it to the XC State Championships. I basically ran my first 1/2 marathon the following year in 2010- it was in the middle of our Canadian winter, which had me running it in -28C.

I started as a Strength and Conditioning Coach working in many different gyms at the age of 20.
I’ve been doing this for 15 years now and was a sole trader for almost 10 of those years.

As an Athlete
  • Boston Marathon 2019 : 2:45:35
  • Surf Coast Trail 1/2 Marathon 2019 : 1st Overall
  • Peak & Trails 50K: 1st Overall & Course Record
  • The Upper Murray Challenge (Multisport Race: 28K Mountain Bike, 26K River Kayak, 25K Trail Run): 3rd Overall

I’m also a member of the Mitta Mitta Canoe Club & the Albury Athletics Club.

More recently as a Coach

I established myself in Albury NSW in February of 2019. I moved here because my beautiful wife Bel was already well established in Albury.
I restarted my coaching business here as a sole trader as a Strength & Conditioning/Run Coach in the area for a tad less than 2 years before I decided to join the team at O-health!
In those two years, I’ve tried to get involved in the running community as much as I could. Running is my passion and I love to help others unlock their full potential and simply help them live and love an active lifestyle.
I joined the Trails & Ales crew, I’ve been to quite a few ParkRun’s, and I co-founded the Albury Track Club with a few of my mates. Some of us have been meeting up every Wednesday morning for a Track workout for the past year, where we get 40+ runners during our beautiful summer months.

I joined O-health as I found the team aspect to be very appealing. I feel I can do more with a team around me. Working alongside great therapists and coaches means I can learn a whole lot from them! Both myself and my athletes can benefit greatly from them. Also, having a solid administration team means I can put most of my focus and work hours within my week into what I enjoy most- coaching!
